Important Information For Your Vet

Here are a few facts we have found of which your veterinarian may not be aware.

Please print this information and bring it with you on your next appointment.  If you know your vet sees skunks other than your own, you may want to send it to them or give them the link to this page.

The following have been known to kill skunks

Baytril - Skunks can not have Baytril.  It has been directly related to deaths.  Baytril damages the liver and massive organ failure follows.

NSAIDS - This includes Baby Aspirin.  Skunks can not have NSAIDS.  They have been directly related to deaths.  NSAIDS damage the liver and massive organ failure follows.

Metacam - Skunks can not have Metacam.  It has been directly related to deaths.  Metacam damages the liver and massive organ failure follows.

Grapes - A popular treat for skunks also kills them by putting them into renal failure.  Even just a few have been known to kill a skunk.

The following can be given to skunks safely

Anti-biotics ~ Amoxicillin, Amoxicillin-clavulanate potassium, Clavamox, Chloramphenicol, Chloromycetin palmitate, Cephalexin,Keflex (cefa), Sulfasoxazole/trimethoprim, Tribrissen

Anti-inflammatories ~ (do not give if patient has kidney problems),

Arthritic and Pain Relievers ~  Hydraplenish (Hyaluronic Acid) , Serraflazyme, Synovi, Traumeel
